What are hand tufted area rugs?
Hand tufted rugs are those rugs created without tying any knot. Instead, a tufting gun shoots strands of wool through a canvas. Unlike a hand knotted carpet, a hand tufted rug takes very little time to develop. This greatly reduces the cost of production. As a result, hand tufted rugs are affordable.

Types Of Tufted Rugs

Hand tufted wool rugs are by far the most popular and most produced of all the other types of rugs.
We use high quality wool – New Zealand wool, semi-worsted wool and Indian wool as well. The other rug fibers we use are bamboo silk, viscose, jute, and others.

Process Of Making A Hand Tufted Rug
Step 1
A large cotton cloth or canvas is tightly stretched and pined of a metal frame. The frame has a series of needle tooth-like on all its four sides. A tight canvas on the frame helps tufting easier and creates clear cut designs.
Step 2
Before tufting, the desired design is first drawn on a large transparent paper. The paper looks like a butter paper. The designs on the paper are carefully pierced with tiny holes. It is then placed on the canvas. A cloth is then dipped into blue ink and rubbed on the paper. Doing so carries the design from the paper onto the canvas.
Step 3
Now begins the making of the rug. Dyed color wool/silk is set in the weaving tool called a ‘tufting gun’. Tufting gun is a semiotic tool that works with human hands. It is this tool that makes the construction less labor-intensive and inexpensive.
Wool is shot through the canvas where loops of wool appear at the canvas backing. The canvas forms the foundation of the rug. This is the basic compared to knotted rugs. The blue ink lines on the canvas guide the weavers to carry the process with ease.
Step 4
After looping the whole design on the canvas the canvas is then removed from the frame and sent for a wash. Washing brings more luster and sheen to the carpet.
Step 5
The next step is to add the protecting layer to the looped canvas. This is important as it secures the pile from getting apart from the rug. A hand tufted rug is never complete without two latex layering.
Step 6
The next step is applying a layer of rubber grid called ‘scrim’. On top of that a layer of latex glue is again applied. The glue helps the wool and the canvas to stick together.
How To Clean Hand Tufted Wool Rug
The way to clean these woolen tufted rugs is simple. Hand tufted area rugs do not require professional cleaning. You can clean your own rug by yourself at home.
Warning: The foremost point is to remember is that never wet wash a tufted carpet. Always avoid these rugs from getting wet. Once the water reaches the rug’s backing it can react with the glue and damage the rug.
The latex at the backing can weaken due to water and loosen its grip with wool.
Let’s discuss a few easy steps you can take to clean hand tufted area rugs.
- Vacuum the rug regularly to avoid soil accumulation. Vacuum at least 1-2 times a month to keep the rug looking fresh and new.
- To clean wet stains first blot the stain with a paper towel. If there is excessive wet stain, blot and turn the rug upside down. This will prevent the stain from escaping deeper into the fiber and to its backing.
- Pour cold water in a bucket and mix any dish-washing soap or shampoo in it.
- Soak a piece of white cloth/towel into the mixture. Now rub it on the rug surface to clean the stain.
- Repeat the process until the stain disappears.
- Leave it to dry.

Shedding
Shedding here refers to the fiber coming off from a rug. Often you will notice that when you bring a new hand tufted rug home some fiber shed. If you find this happening with yours, do not worry, it’s completely a normal thing with handmade rugs.
Hand tufted area rugs shed for about 2-3 days from the day of buying. After a few days, it will lessen and then stop.
